THE END OF THE CULTURE WAR Richard B. Spencer

The High Court has spoken; the 30-year "Culture War" is officially over.
It's important to recognize the manner in which this victory/defeat has taken place. For at least a century, the Marxian Left (in various phases) has taken up the charge of abolishing marriage. The traditional family was, depending on the time and place, the last bastion of Christian mystification, capitalism, sexism, patriarchy, racism, homophobia, meat-eating, und so weiter. . .
For a retro-leftist, the idea of "gay marriage" is as subversive and ridiculous as it is for a traditionalist: "gay marriage" would mean bringing homosexuals into the oppressive, bourgeois tyranny of monogamy!
The Culture War ended not through the acceptance of "free love" but through a kind of Hegelian synthesis; gay marriage was legitimized by becoming, strangely, a "conservative" cause. It became about equality—and who could be against that? And as Republican Senator Rob Portman opined, gay marriage will bring "stability" to gays' lives—so no more gross, half-naked parades; gay couples will instead get a mortgage and start voting Republican.
The malleability of public opinion throughout this process has been breathtaking. A recent CBS poll reported that 53 percent of the public supports gay marriage. (Of course, polling can produce different results depending on how questions are phrased; it is clear, however, that many more American support gay marriage than oppose it.)

Where to get Confederate battle flags

confederate_navy_jack_flag

With the recent media/government binge of leftist-fueled demands to remove the Confederate battle flag from as many places as possible, many users are wondering where to get one of their very own.
The Confederacy symbolized resistance to the federal state of America which had been created to enforce a uniform standard among different people, in effect hobbling everyone to the demands of the Crowd. People in cities wanted a type of safety that life cannot provide, and absent a shared culture, they found it in ideology. The Confederacy, like the Founding Fathers, resisted this impulse as it inevitably slides to popular illusions which make people feel validated in their own bad choices by scapegoating any who rise above the lowest common denominator. The Northern States chose to make slavery, a fading institution but still important to Southern livelihoods, their battleground and used the Enlightenment doctrine of “equality” as their justification.

Harvard’s Lani Guinier: Do away with ‘testocratic merit’ in college admissions

You may remember Lani Guinier as Bill Clinton’s nominee for assistant attorney general back in 1993.
Eventually, Clinton withdrew Guinier’s name from consideration after some of her more controversial opinions came to light.
She is now at Harvard Law School and her new book, The Tyranny of the Meritocracy: Democratizing Higher Education in America takes aim at exams like the SAT used in college admissions.
She says, “Testocratic merit makes the assumption that test scores are the best evidence of applicants’ worth, without paying much attention to the environments in which one finds those individuals. It thereby ignores several built-in biases that privilege those who are already quite advantaged.”

Did Winston Churchill Start World War II?

world war ii

No serious thinker who wishes to truly understand the second World War can do without two books;Londonihilists andGreen Eyes. Sadly, most serious thinkers will have to do without them because they are available only in Polish and absolutely no one is in much of a rush to translate them into English. Their author, Stanisław Cat Mackiewicz, was the premiere conservative Man of Letters and Statesman in interbellum Poland. In his youth, he was a cavalry officer who fought during World War I in Belarus. An aristocrat born in St. Petersburg and leader of the Vilnus old guard conservatives—Cat was the very best that Poland had to offer. He was the most intelligent political thinker of his age. Adopting his pen name “Cat” from Kipling’s poem about “The Cat that walked by Himself”, Mackiewicz lived up to the archetype.
As a Statesman, his greatest achievement was the organization of a grand conference between Polish socialist dictator Marshal Józef Piłsudzki and the Polish Nobility following the May 1926 coup d’état. Cat’s goal in organizing the conference was to secure Poland against any extreme forms of socialism. His greatest triumph as a matter of influence was the conclusion of the Polish-German non-aggression pact of 1934, a policy he argued for in earnest as editor in chief of the conservative journal “The Word” . Following the death of Marshal Piłsudzki and the rapid deterioration of Polish-German relations under Foreign Minister Beck and his “dictatorship without a dictator,” Cat was arrested and imprisoned by the Polish Sanation for his staunch opposition to the government’s policies.

8 Urban Legends That Turned Out To Be True

Do car alarms do any good?

Dear Cecil:
What is it with car alarms? They go off 24/7 for any or no reason to create a constant urban din. Do they deter any thefts, are they required by law, or are they just a way to lard on the features?
Cecil replies:
Listen, Samuel, if you’re tormented by the constant urban din of Vermont, you’ve got a pretty low annoyance threshold. I’m going to work on the assumption you’re a refugee from New York, where historically car alarms have been more of an issue (although speaking as a big-city habitué I’d say this is one irritant that may have crested a good 20 years ago). Browsing on the interwebs I find a claim from back in 2003 that noisy car alarms cost New Yorkers $400 million annually, based on an ingenious but basically harebrained calculation of the extent to which car alarms diminish the quality of life for those in hearing range. One wants to say: Suck it up, crybabies. Admittedly that’s the attitude of someone not currently being driven bats by a blaring alarm, and one wants to be supportive of one’s fellow city dwellers. So here’s the best case I can make for why car alarms should be banned.
1. Car alarms have middling, but certainly some, effectiveness as a theft deterrent, research suggests. We learn this from Farrell et al (2010), who use the straightforward method of comparing (a) the number of cars with a given antitheft technology against (b) the number of cars with that technology that get stolen. Sixty-three percent of cars have alarms, we learn (based on UK data), whereas only 41 percent of stolen cars have alarms. Forty-one is 35 percent less than 63. Ergo, car alarms are 35 percent effective in deterring theft.
2. This is considerably less potent than what Farrell’s numbers suggest is the single most effective antitheft measure, namely a tracking device on your car that lets the cops (or you) determine its whereabouts if bad guys abscond with it. Effectiveness: 77 percent.

The British Invasion by Steve Sailer

Are American actors in decline due to the rise of better-trained British leading men, as an Atlantic article by Terrence Rafferty contends?
Sure, the younger Brits are more skilled actors on average, but when wasn’t this true? Cary Grant, for example, was the greatest romantic-comedy leading man in Hollywood history. The Brits have tended to be better writers and conversationalists as well.
I blame Shakespeare.
As William Monahan, the Bostonian screenwriter of The Departed, has observed:
I write drama in the English language…. London matters to me because it’s the center of what I do for a living and has been since Tudor times.
Rafferty’s argument is that under-40 American leading men are struggling because the roles are going to all the well-trained British technicians who can now master American accents.

Dylan makes a choice

burning_the_confederate_battle_flag

One fine summer evening, Dylan — his parents having awakened to the futility of novelty spellings a few years before — contemplated his final act. He knew he did not want to survive into adulthood; it was too corrupt, banal, humiliating, pointless and most of all stupid to want to live through it. When he looked at the vista of life ahead of him, he saw nothing but bleakness; the drugs he had begun taking a few months ago only intensified this feeling. It was an enemy he could not escape, and he knew the time was soon.
Whispering aloud as he counted the rounds, he loaded all of the clips he owned for his Glock .45 and got into his black Hyundai. While he drove, his mind reiterated the circular loop that had occupied it for the past weeks: Is this what must be done? Yes, there is no other way. He sniffled once, and turned on the radio in disgust. Nothing but hip-hop, ads for Chinese products, and political jargon that made no sense. He snapped it off without care. He would not need this car for long.

Russia to respond to sanctions extension by EU

Russia to respond to sanctions extension by EU

The European Union's Official Journal published a legal document on June 23 extending the EU's economic sanctions against Russia until January 31, 2016. Consequently, an appropriate decision adopted by the EU Foreign Affairs Council came into force.
This decision was agreed upon by EU member countries' permanent representatives in Brussels on June 17 and was confirmed at a meeting of the EU Foreign Affairs Council in Luxemburg on June 22.
At the same time, a diplomatic source at the EU told Interfax that this document does not enact the sanctions once again because measures remain in force, but only regularizes the decision to extend them. The document authorizes the decision to prolong these restrictive measures, which concern EU-Russia relations in finances, energy, defense and the trade in dual-purpose products.

The real history of the Civil War and the Confederate Flag

Today Dr. Duke devoted the hour to the real history of the Civil War and the Confederate Flag. He explained that far from being a war necessary to end slavery, even Lincoln declared that the war was not over slavery. Moreover, slavery still existed in several Union states, but was actually an institution on its last legs and was already ending in country after country through the Western Hemisphere.
CivilWarAmputees
Dr. Duke contended that the attack on southern symbols and heritage such as the Confederate Flag are actually part of an overall Jewish-led attack on European Americans. In fact, for a century after the Civil War northern text books and statesmen paid homage to many symbols of the confederacy, in particular General Robert E. Lee. But this accommodation by northerners of southern heritage is not acceptable to today’s Zio elite, who seek to exploit every conceivable division among us, whether it be regional or racial or whatever. Dr. Slattery also made the case that the Civil War created so much tragedy and left freed slaves, southerners, and many others in such difficult conditions that it is hard to believe there wasn’t a better way to resolve things.

McDonald’s Downsizes for the First Time in Over 40 Years

McDonald’s-Downsizes-for-the-First-Time-in-Over-40-Years

For the first time in over four decades, McDonald’s is shrinking. The fast food giant is currently closing more restaurants in the United States than it is opening, signifying a period of contraction for the global corporation.
McDonald’s announced in April that it would be closing 700 “underperforming” locations, but because of the company’s sheer size—it has 14,300 locations in the United States alone—this was not necessarily a reduction in the size of the company, especially because it continues to open locations around the world. It still has more than double the locations of Burger King, its closest competitor.
McDonald’s spokesperson Becca Hary insisted the closings were “minimal” in comparison to the number of stores that will remain open, but the marked decrease in “productivity” highlights a growing shift. After 45 years of consistent growth, McDonald’s appears to have plateaued—at least for now.

A Modern Joan of Arc

Dylann Roof's Manifesto Released

Trump for President? — Paul Craig Roberts

Trump for President?
Paul Craig Roberts
Perhaps it has occurred to you as it has to me that the United States is no longer capable of producing political leadership. In the current issue of Trends Journal, Gerald Celente describes the eight candidates (at the time he went to press) for the US presidential nomination as “Liars, cowards, freaks & fools.”
Celente put it well. If you look at the sorry collection that aspires to be the CEO of what continues to be described as the “exceptional, indispensable, most important country with the largest economy and military, the world’s only Superpower, the Uni-power,” you see a collection of nobodies. America is like the last days of Rome when contenting factions fought to put their puppet on the throne.
There is no known politician in America who measures up to Vladimir Putin’s ankle, or to the knee of China’s leaders, or to the waist of Ecuador’s, Bolivia’s, Venezuela’s, Argentina’s, Brazil’s, or to the chests of India’s and South Africa’s.
In Europe, the UK, Australia, and Canada, the natural leaders are also frozen out of the corrupt system.
In the US, “leadership” positions depend on financial support from the ruling economic interests. American presidents and politicians represent about six powerful private interest groups and no one else.

Flight from White by Steve Sailer

As you may have noticed, the more denunciations we hear of Cisgender Straight White Male Privilege, the more the evidence mounts that, all else being equal, the rewards in 2015 tend to lie on the other side.
If you want to know which side is more powerful at present, just observe who is wielding the rhetorical whip hand. It’s human nature to fear, respect, and even admire those with the power to harm you. Hence, it’s popular to side with the strong to denounce the weak. As Mencius Moldbug observed in 2013:
The logic of the witch hunter is simple…. The first requirement is to invert the reality of power…. In a country where anyone who speaks out against the witches is soon found dangling by his heels from an oak at midnight with his head shrunk to the size of a baseball, we won’t see a lot of witch-hunting and we know there’s a serious witch problem. In a country where witch-hunting is a stable and lucrative career, and also an amateur pastime enjoyed by millions of hobbyists on the weekend, we know there are no real witches worth a damn.
Of course, the more our society obsesses over the Looming Witch Menace, the more absurd becomes the daily news, and the harder it is to refrain from breaking out laughing. Perhaps June 2015 will go down in history as the month the reigning pieties jumped the shark.

ANGRY WHITE MALE by Alex Fontana

The facts about Dylann "Storm(front)" Roof speak for themselves:

At twenty-one years old, introverted, withdrawn, a loner and a drug user, looking like an emaciated Macaulay Culkin, Roof had exhibited deviant social behaviour and was twice arrested, once for trespassing and once for a drug charge (Buprenorphine was the drug listed in some accounts). Roof came from a broken family; he was unemployed, and probably from a low-socioeconomic background. He seemed to lack a proper support network and social circle – which caused him to feel isolated, hopeless, lonely, frustrated, and daunted by an uncertain future.

From the testimony of friends and survivors of his homicidal "lashing out" at an AME Church in Charleston, South Carolina,  and from other sources of information-- including photographs of him wearing apartheid era patches-- Roof apparently espoused ‘white supremacist ideology.’ Reportedly he told one of the survivors, “I have to do it. You rape our women and you’re taking over the country.”

EXCLUSIVE: Migrant threat to kill truckers as UK drivers fear for their lives in Calais

Migrants in Calais as truckers try to import food and goods into the UK

MACHETE-wielding migrants have made Calais a war zone with truckers risking their lives every day to bring goods to Britain.

Armed gangs target lorries carrying UK-bound supplies as the refugee crisis in the French port town spirals out of control.
Frightened drivers describe being threatened at knife-point, beaten with baseball bats and having their trailers slashed as asylum-seekers try to stowaway across the Channel.
Freight firm boss Kevin Hopper said: "It's just a matter of time now before someone is killed."
The threat to truckers bringing goods into Britain is now so grave that some companies are avoiding the Calais docks altogether, adding costly miles to journeys.
Worried drivers spoke of their terrifying experiences.

Teacher: I Don’t Teach Shakespeare Because He’s White

Shakespeare [Creative Commons]

The Washington Post has published a guest article by a California teacher arguing that American high school students shouldn’t read Shakespeare because he’s a dead, white man.
Dana Dusbiber, who teaches English in Sacramento, says she avoids Hamlet and all the rest because her minority students shouldn’t be expected to study a “a long-dead, British guy” (Dusbiber herself is white). And while Shakespeare is widely regarded as the premier writer of the English language, able to timelessly portray themes central to the human experience, Dusbiber says he only is regarded that way because “some white people” ordained it and he can easily be replaced.

RACISM AND SEXISM VIEWED AS ARISTOTELIAN VIRTUES

For Aristotle there were always two vices for every virtue. This was because of his belief in the “Golden Mean.” For example, the virtue Courage existed between a vice of deficiency (Cowardice) and a vice of excess (Rashness)

To emphasize the metapoint: Aristotle saw all vices as existing on a continuum with all virtues, with no wall between them. This is very different from the Manichean morality that later poisoned the West through Judaic theology. What happens, however, if we apply this Aristotelian analysis to the major “vices” of the modern day, namely “Racism” and “Sexism”?

Of course the liberal left, with its agenda of deconstructing all elements of identity above the atomistic individual, seeks to impose its totalitarian will through a variation on this Judaic Manichaeism called “political correctness.” The sins of “Racism” and “Sexism” are accordingly seen as evil essence that must be expunged from society and all intellectual discourse through a no-platform, knee-jerk, quarantine, point-and-sputter approach. Despite its crudity and lack of sophistication, this approach has been highly successful at imposing liberal extremism on the West. But it is clearly an approach that is at odds with an Aristotelian viewpoint, not to mention intellectualism and reason themselves.

The USS Liberty Must Not be Forgotten by PHILIP GIRALDI

Liberty Commemoration 2015
Yesterday I attended a commemoration service at the USS Liberty memorial in Arlington National Cemetery. Present were a number of surviving crewmembers as well as veterans like myself and other Americans who are committed to ensuring that the story of the Liberty will not die in hopes that someday the United States government will have the courage to acknowledge what actually happened on that fateful day.
But in truth the attack on the USS Liberty by Israeli warplanes and torpedo boats on June 8, 1967, has almost faded from memory, with a younger generation completely unaware that a United States naval vessel was once deliberately attacked and nearly sunk by America’s “greatest friend and ally” Israel. The attack was followed by a cover-up that demonstrated clearly that at least one president of the United States even back nearly fifty years ago valued his relationship with the state of Israel above his loyalty to his own country.
It was in truth the worst attack ever carried out on a US Naval vessel in peace time. Thirty-four American sailors, marines and civilian personnel were killed and 171 more wounded in the two hour assault, which was clearly intended to destroy the intelligence gathering vessel operating in international waters collecting information on the ongoing Six Day War between Israel and its Arab neighbors. The Israelis, whose planes had their Star of David markings covered up so Egypt could be blamed, attacked the ship repeatedly from the air and using gunboats from the sea. The incredible courage and determination of the surviving crew was the only thing that kept the Liberty from sinking.

ann coulter interview: part one By:Tom Piatak

Last week saw the publication of Ann Coulter's new book on immigration, Adiós America!
This is an important book. Although Coulter sounds a number of themes that will be quite familiar to Chronicles readers, she also breaks new ground, particularly in her detailed description of how mass immigration is harming ordinary Americans. It also comes out at a critical time, after President Obama has issued an executive amnesty for millions of illegal immigrants, an amnesty that the Republican leadership in Congress has refused to do anything about and that most of the candidates currently running for president support, either openly or tacitly.
Coulter brings her formidable skill as a polemicist fully to bear in this book. It is written with verve and humor. An example of the latter occurs in Coulter's description of the media's obsession with ISIS: "The American media's fixation on monsters twelve hours and several connecting flights away from the United States, while ignoring the savage butchery occurring in a country within walking distance, is so obvious that border fence advocates have taken to warning that Islamic terrorists might enter the United States through the wide-open Mexican border. It's possible, but you know what's even more possible? That Mexicans will walk across the border."

Life of Brian by Steve Sailer

Love & Mercy is a superb new biopic about head Beach Boy Brian Wilson’s creative summit in 1966, the year of the groundbreaking Pet Sounds album (featuring the sublime “Wouldn’t It Be Nice” and “God Only Knows”) and follow-up “Good Vibrations” mega-single, the greatest Southern California track ever constructed. The film follows Wilson briefly into his rapid collapse into mental illness and obesity, and then skips to his slow but gratifying recovery in the early 1990s.
This may not sound particularly promising, in part because musical biopics are out of fashion. Further, the Beach Boys’ family melodrama is familiar from two TV movies plus the thousands of interviews Wilson has done over the decades to promote the legend.
Moreover, it sounds gimmicky that two actors who don’t look much alike were cast as young Brian (moonfaced Paul Dano, who may be best known as the preacher in There Will Be Blood) and old Brian (John Cusack, whose career also peaked at age 23 when he held up the boom box in Cameron Crowe’s Say Anything…). But then again, Wilson’s face matured unexpectedly from chubby innocence to weathered ruggedness.

Watch African migrants destroy southern Italy

Ann Coulter’s book captures threat from immigration, but hides Jewish leading role

coulteriran

There has been a great deal of talk in the past few days about the new book on immigration by Ann Coulter, “Adios, America!: The Left’s Plan to Turn Our Country into a Third World Hellhole.”

The book is being very well received by anti-immigration activists, not just for the boost in attention that the anti-immigration position will get in the media but also because Coulter is devoting most of the book to legal immigration, and not just the safer target of illegal immigration. But is this really the game-changing book that many anti-immigration activists hope it will be? I have my doubts.
First of all, the book completely leaves out the Jewish leading role in passing the Immigration and Nationality Act of 1965, which is the law that governs the legal immigration that Coulter’s book addresses. Instead, she blames everything on “the left,” which she says is willing to allow the U.S. to become a poor third-world country just so that a government-dependent non-white majority will make the Democrats a permanent ruling party. This is very different from the argument that Jews are the main force behind immigration and are motivated by a divide-and-conquer strategy and the desire to make sure a nationalism never develops in a cohesive white majority that could threaten Jewish rule. So which is it?

The Myth of a Mighty Germany By Parke Nicholson

A picture of a soccer player is projected on a wall with graffiti and greetings by soccer fans in Dortmund, June 13, 2006.

This June, the G-7 will meet in an opulent castle near Germany’s highest mountain, the Zugspitze. It was initially built, according to the host’s website, for an “egocentric zealot” who sought to convert Jews to Christianity. Schloss Elmau has since become a spa and cultural center, but the lofty location seems somehow like an appropriate reflection of the inflated discussion in recent years about Germany’s role in the world.
Many observers have rushed to proclaim Germany’s rise to prominence. U.S. academic Walter Russell Mead recently ranked Germany as the second most powerful member of the G-7. A survey by the British magazine Monocle determined thatGermany’s “soft power” rivals that of the United States. Most recently, Germany’s own renewable energy transition has prompted columnist Tom Friedman to praise the country as theworld’s first “green superpower.”
It is indeed a good time to be a Germanophile. The country remains Europe’s largest market and now exports as many goods as the United States. Berlin has played the key role in managing Europe’s financial crisis as well as its security crisis with Russia. Germany’s national soccer team is also the reigning world champion (no small matter to most countries outside of North America). Chancellor Angela Merkel is regarded as the top-performing democratic leader in the world.

Now the truth emerges: how the US fuelled the rise of Isis in Syria and Iraq

Eva Bee illustration

The war on terror, that campaign without end launched 14 years ago by George Bush, is tying itself up in ever more grotesque contortions. On Monday the trial in London of a Swedish man, Bherlin Gildo, accused of terrorism in Syria, collapsed after it became clear British intelligence had been arming the same rebel groups the defendant was charged with supporting.
The prosecution abandoned the case, apparently to avoid embarrassing the intelligence services. The defence argued that going ahead withthe trial would have been an “affront to justice” when there was plenty of evidence the British state was itself providing “extensive support” to the armed Syrian opposition.
That didn’t only include the “non-lethal assistance” boasted of by the government (including body armour and military vehicles), but training, logistical support and the secret supply of “arms on a massive scale”. Reports were cited that MI6 had cooperated with the CIA on a “rat line” of arms transfers from Libyan stockpiles to the Syrian rebels in 2012 after the fall of the Gaddafi regime.
Clearly, the absurdity of sending someone to prison for doing what ministers and their security officials were up to themselves became too much. But it’s only the latest of a string of such cases. Less fortunate was a London cab driver Anis Sardar, who was given a life sentence a fortnight earlier for taking part in 2007 in resistance to the occupation of Iraq by US and British forces. Armed opposition to illegal invasion and occupation clearly doesn’t constitute terrorism or murder on most definitions, including the Geneva convention.

Spike in violent crime: Why you shouldn't worry (+video)

Homicide rates have jumped sharply in several major cities across the country, but experts say they do not see evidence that America's two-decade drop in crime is being erased.
Murders are on the rise in several major US cities, amid increasing scrutiny of urban law enforcement after recent police shootings of unarmed men around the country.
Baltimore’s murder rate in May was the highest in more than 40 years, while fatal shootings in New York are up 20 percent so far in 2015.
But while triple digit percentage increases in Milwaukee and a more than 50 percent jump in Houston might make for arresting headlines, criminal justice experts say they don’t currently see a reason for the public to be alarmed. For one thing, part of the reason the percentages look so high is because violent crime, including murder, has dropped so much since the 1990s. (For example, Milwaukee saw 63 murders through May, up from 31 in 2014 – but that is still well below the average from the 1990s.) And it is not at all clear that this is the beginning of a long-term increase. So far, the spikes of violence have been isolated to certain cities, while crime continues to fall in others, such as Los Angeles and Dallas.

What if the Holocaust had never happened?

Dr. Jeffrey S. Gurock's 'The Holocaust Averted' is a counterfactual history. (Courtesy Yeshiva University)

Things could have been much worse had the cataclysm of the Holocaust not happened,” said Dr. Jeffrey S. Gurock recently over lunch at a Jerusalem café.
A statement like this is hard to swallow if you don’t realize that his new book, “The Holocaust Averted: An Alternate History of American Jewry, 1938-1967,” deals with counterfactual history, a speculative exploration of what-ifs, and the author is in no way dismissive of the murder of six million Jews at the hands of the Nazis.
What Gurock demonstrates in his book is that World War II was a major turning point in American Jewish history, and that many positive things came out of it for American Jews as well as for US-Israel relations. Had key moments in the run-up to and during the course of the war played out differently, the Holocaust may not have happened. Gurock posits that instead, Jews in America would have had to “run for cover.” They would have had to assume—and maintain—a low profile, never achieving the level of empowerment and agency that we associate with American Jews today.
This is the first time that Gurock, a professor of Jewish history at Yeshiva Universityand author and editor of 14 books, including “Orthodox Jews in America” and “Jews in Gotham: New York Jews And Their Changing City,” has tried his hand at counterfactual history. “It is, at the very root, the idea of conjecturing on what did not happen, or what might have happened, in order to understand what did happen,” wrote Jeremy Black and Donald M. MacRaild in their study guide, “Studying History.”
“I’m going out on a limb in a way, but people won’t saw it off,” said Gurock. “I’m emphasizing turning points in history, and I am using primary sources and important secondary sources.”

Why the US can’t fix the Middle East’s problems, in one quote

There's no doubt that America's Middle East policy has contributed mightily to the region's problems. But it's important to keep in mind that the real causes of regional chaos are local forces well beyond America's control — as this quote, from a Politico Magazine piece by former Obama administration official Philip Gordon, perfectly demonstrates:
In Iraq, the U.S. intervened and occupied, and the result was a costly disaster. In Libya, the U.S. intervened and did not occupy, and the result was a costly disaster. In Syria, the U.S. neither intervened nor occupied, and the result is a costly disaster.
Iraq is in the midst of a brutal fight against ISIS, Libya is split between two so-called governments and is increasingly a haven for jihadism, and Syria is stuck in a disastrous civil war. Though America used different amounts of force in all three places, Gordon correctly points out that none of the tactics prevented the country in question from descending into chaos.

Tests on Delhi eateries show high level of faecal matter in street food

Delhi eateries
If you were so far unable to fight the urge of digging into spicy water-filled crispy golgappas or steaming momos, here's a very strong - and shocking - reason.
A latest study has found high faecal contamination in suchfast food and junk food items , especially in several west and central Delhi localities.
Underlining that street food and hygiene have always been strange bedfellows, the study by Institute of Hotel Management, Catering and Nutrition, Pusa, shows extremely high volume of E. coli bacteria, which can cause severe infections, in these snacks.
Taking note of the report, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has written to Delhi's food safety commissioner to check the quality of street food items.
"We conducted the study to analyse the microbial load in Delhi's street food. It was done with a survey of commonly consumed street food by 100 individuals," said Dr Arpita Sharma of the Institute of Hotel Management, Catering and Nutrition.

Is the world more dangerous for kids than it was 30 years ago?

Dear Cecil:
I am the parent of two young children. I was recently reminiscing with fellow parents about our youth and the freedom we enjoyed to play around the neighborhood without parental supervision. We all agreed we wouldn't allow our children to do the same given today's more dangerous world. That made me wonder: Is today's world really more dangerous for kids than it was 30 years ago? Have incidents of abduction and other assaults on children increased, or has the information age's constant news barrage given us the impression that predators lurk around every corner?
Cecil replies:
No, today’s world isn't more dangerous. You grew up during the most crime-ridden period in modern American history. By objective measures the country is far safer now. But you and countless other parents think the reverse is true. What accounts for this delusion?
The facts, as explained in my 2002 column on this subject: A crude benchmark of public safety is the violent crime rate reported annually by the FBI. In 1960 the rate was 161 per 100,000 people. Starting in 1963 the rate began rising sharply, reaching 364 by 1970 and peaking at 758 in 1991. Since then it's dropped steadily: in 2013 it was down to 368, about the same as in 1970.
Assuming you’re now 35, you were born in 1980 or so and were 11 in 1991, the worst year on record. And yet you think it was safer then than now. Possible explanations:
You believe everything you’re told by the media (other than me). This is the theory advanced by Lenore Skenazy, author of Free-Range Kids, who created an uproar in 2008 when she revealed in her syndicated column that she’d let her nine-year-old son ride the New York subway home alone. Skenazy blames cable-news sensation-mongers abetted by child-advocacy alarmists.

Ten Thousand Haven Monahans by Steve Sailer

“The philosophers have only interpreted the world, in various ways. The point, however, is to change it.” – Karl Marx
The latest liberal hoax exposed is a happy face mirror image of the U. of Virginia rape fraud: a massively publicized paper in Science, the most prominent American peer-reviewed academic journal, about how to market gay marriage to minority voters that turned out to be a complete swindle, another exercise in catfishing made-up people into electronic existence.
And yet the most interesting point about this ignominious affair is that even if the paper had been utterly legitimate, it still wouldn’t have been “science” in the sense that most people understand the word: as a search for relatively permanent truths. Instead, it would have just been marketing research.
And that illustrates out a long-term trend. In our Age of Gladwell, leftist social scientists are increasingly giving up on looking for truths about human beings, which could get them in trouble if they found them, and reconfiguring themselves as handmaidens of the marketing industry.

Idaho Ag-gag Bill Bans Filming Inside Farms After Abuse Video Surfaces

Photo: Mercy for Animals on Flickr
BOISE, Idaho — According to emails obtained through an open records request, a dairy industry lobbyist was allowed to directly craft what would ultimately become Idaho’s “ag-gag” bill — the latest in a series of state laws that seek to prevent animal rights activists from exposing the abuses of industrial agriculture.
The bill’s sponsor, Idaho state Sen. Jim Patrick, a Republican from Twin Falls, claimed the bill was crafted in response to a video showing animal rights abuses at a Bettencourt, Idaho, farm that supplies Burger King meat. The Intercept’s Lee Fang writes that Patrick “compared the activists behind the Bettencourt video to marauding invaders who burned crops to starve their enemies. ‘This is clear back in the sixth century B.C.,’ Patrick said, according to Al Jazeera America. ‘This is the way you combat your enemies.’”
Those caught violating the law would face a year in jail and up to $5,000 in fines for covertly recording farming operations. The same punishments are extended to those who lie on job applications about their connections to animal rights groups or news organizations.

Moscow fears 'Libyan scenario' may repeat thru UNSC illegal immigration resolution

A possible resolution in the UN Security Council addressing illegal immigration issues must be considered to the last detail so that it does not create an opportunity for violations, as that happened after the adoption of the UN resolution on Libya, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has said.
"The mandate of such an operation will have to be spelled out to the last detail because we do not want the ambiguity, which became a source of flagrant violations of the known resolution on Libya adopted in 2011, to repeat itself," Lavrov said at a press conference after negotiations with his Italian counterpart Paolo Gentiloni.
Russia confirmed its interest in contributing to the resolution of the illegal immigration problem, in particular, at the UN Security Council, Lavrov said.
The UN Security Council has suspended the elaboration of the illegal immigration resolution due to consultations with the Libyan authorities on the possibility of a military operation.

Chapter 9: Disbanding Troops and Bureaucrats by Gary North

And he shall judge among many people, and rebuke strong nations afar off; and they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruninghooks: nation shall not lift up a sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more. But they shall sit every man under his vine and under his fig tree; and none shall make them afraid: for the mouth of the Lord of hosts hath spoken it (Micah 4:3-4).
This is a prophecy regarding "the last days" (v. 1). The description of peace -- swords into ploughshares -- is one of the most familiar in Western culture. It is a day that men say they dream of.
Let us assume that the day comes to pass. Can you imagine a group of economists calling for the continuation of the sword industry? They would invoke this argument: "If we get out of sword production prematurely, there will be unemployment. This would bring the post-war economy to a screeching halt. What we need is a program of sequential reduction of weapons production that does not disrupt the job market."
As for letting the troops return home, the suggestion would bring this response: "The rise in unemployment would be devastating to the post-war economy. The bulk of our troops must be kept on active duty until such time as the economy makes the transformation back to peacetime production."
How long would it take to turn swords into ploughshares under these post-war conditions? How long would the troops wait to be demobilized in order to return home? The answer would be open-ended. No one would know. Politics would decide.
